Learn ocarina – Shapes
The ocarina is a globular wind musical instrument. What does it means? In simple words it's round, closed like a bottle and you blow into it from a mouthpiece.
There are two versions which are the most common types of ocarina: pendant and transverse.
Which is the difference between the two? First of all is the shape.
A pendant ocarina is usually round and more tiny if you compare the same key.
While a transverse ocarina has a long shape.
Another difference is that the pendant ocarina has less holes and uses a cross finger combination to play the musical notes. This is why the size is smaller than a transverse ocarina.
The transverse ocarina has many holes and a linear finger progression to play the musical notes.
Another kind of ocarina shape which is becoming more popular now is the inline ocarina.

Inline ocarina is more similar to the transverse ocarina because it has a long shape and a linear finger progression but the ocarina body shape is usually cylindrical or rectangular with the mouthpiece in the same line of the finger holes.
They are very easy to hold so they can be a good first ocarina for new players.
Now that you know which shape can an ocarina have, it's time to talk about the different parts that compose it. Let's go to read Learn Ocarina – Mouthpieces tutorial.
