Learn sheet music – Page architecture
It is now time to give a name to all the things that compose a sheet music!
Let's take a look at a very simple sheet music that shows the essential only.
A sheet music page is basically a simple thing, it has musical notes on it so you pretty much want to know it only.
But sometimes when you want to search some specific information you can get lost.
So it is better for you to know how a sheet music page is composed.
Let's look at the upper part of the page.
On the centre top of our sheet music page you will find the Title of the song.
Under of it there is the subtitle. It can be the name of the CD or the film where it is taken from or simply the specific movement of the classical song. From the sheet music on this website under the subtitle you will find some information written on other languages too.
On the top right of the page there is the composer of the song.
Under of it, else on the top left corner of the page, you will find the Lyricist which is the person that wrote the words of the song.
The top section of the sheet music is so finished. Pretty easy until now, correct?
Now let's have a look at all the things that compose the other half of the page.
On the left you will find the range of musical notes, it tells you which is the lowest and highest note that you will find in the sheet music page. In this way you will know which ocarina is required to play it.
The five lines that compose the sheet music are called Staff.
Those vertical bars in the staff instead tell you measures and beats. There are different bars, you can learn the meaning of all of them in the Bars tutorial.
The tempo, that tells how many times the depicted note is played in a minute (beats per minute). Pay close attention at the musical note written there, because it can vary the speed of the song completely. For a full explanation about the different notes please visit the article about Values of notes and pauses .
The key of the song that tells you which notes are sharps and which are flats for the whole sheet music. For a full list of keys please visit the Keys page .
At the beginning of the staff you find the clef. It lets you know which musical instruments are best suited to follow the music that follows. For a full list of those clefs please visit the Clef tutorial .
At the right side is written the meter with the time signature that teach you how to write the musical notes in the sheet music and once you have to play the song, it tells you how. Together with the Tempo they tell you how to play the song.
There is a tutorial about Time too, so after this lesson is completed you may want to take a look at it.
At the left side of the clef you will find a tiny number, this indicates the number of the measure that you are at.
It's useful to not get lost when you need to play a song from a specific point instead of starting from the beginning.
Now that you know where to find all the information that you need, go back at the Natural notes tutorial or the Sharps and Flats tutorial .
Or you can continue reading by going to the Notations tutorial .
You can also use the Learn sheet music – guide list to travel through the whole tutorial.
